Antique Flooring
Many people building new homes or restoring older ones prefer antique flooring. In the case of restoration projects; use of salvaged flooring will keep your restoration period appropriate. Besides all that, antique flooring is beautiful. It has a well worn mellow look that lots of us love. So what if there are a few cracks and worm holes. It just gives the floor more personality. I dont know about you, but I want my home to look comfortable and lived in.
Antique flooring is most commonly wood or parquet. Wide board heart pine floors give a casual country look, while parquet may look better in a more formal home. Appalachian wide plank flooring is available in wormy red oak, white oak, hickory, and wormy maple. Now dont get freaked out about the wormy aspect. There wont be actual worms in the wood, just worm holes. Some salvaged flooring is planed from beams taken from old barns or industrial buildings. These can be had in original condition, but most people prefer it to be cleaned and planed. While the nail and bolt holes remain, old paint and grime are removed prior to shipping. Antique flooring comes in sizes that may not be readily available in modern flooring choices.
Another source for antique flooring other than wood is tile, limestone, cobblestone, and terra cotta salvaged from French farm houses and chateaus. That would certainly add a classy touch to bathrooms, kitchens or patios. It is certainly durable and once installed and sealed it is virtually maintenance free. You may also be able to find marble or granite flooring as well. You might even get something salvaged from a castle. How cool is that?
Architectural salvage companies area good source for antique flooring. You may also find it on online auction sites. I was checking out an ad in the newspaper just yesterday and someone was offering old limestone tiles for the cost of the ad provided the person haul it away. Thats a good deal for sure. There are also a lot of online sources that specialize in antique flooring and other restoration products. Most have catalogs and experienced personnel to assist you with your purchases.
The use of antique or salvaged flooring is an eco friendly way to add a bit of history to your home. Youll be happy with the final result and your floors will be a thing of beauty for years to come.
