These can be had in original condition, but most people prefer it to be cleaned and planed. While the nail and bolt holes remain, old paint and grime are removed prior to shipping. Antique flooring comes in sizes that may not be readily available in modern flooring choices.
Another source for antique flooring other than wood is tile, limestone, cobblestone, and terra cotta salvaged from French farm houses and chateaus. That would certainly add a classy touch to bathrooms, kitchens or patios. It is certainly durable and once installed and sealed it is virtually maintenance free. You may also be able to find marble or granite flooring as well. You might even get something salvaged from a castle. How cool is that?
Architectural salvage companies area good source for antique flooring. You may also find it on online auction sites. I was checking out an ad in the newspaper just yesterday and someone was offering old limestone tiles for the cost of the ad provided the person haul it away. Thatís a good deal for sure. There are also a lot of online sources that specialize in antique flooring and other restoration products. Most have catalogs and experienced personnel to assist you with your purchases.
The use of antique or salvaged flooring is an eco friendly way to add a bit of history to your home. Youíll be happy with the final result and your floors will be a thing of beauty for years to come.
